What makes a person interesting? My bf and I were talking about that. He thinks he's not making friends because he's boring. I disagree -- I've done far fewer interesting things than he has, and he seems to think I'm interesting. Well, half the time I tell other people's stories (My brother did... my friend is at... my boyfriend told me...). He thinks "Oh, you know that bombing in Madrid? yeah, I was studying in Madrid that semester. Thank God it was spring break, I was nowhere near the place. Freaked the shit out of my girlfriend when she couldnt track me down, though," (my wording) is boring as hell. At the same time, he finds my story of that same time much more compelling, but seriously, you can't say this in your first conversation with someone: "All my friends went traveling that semester but me. I was jealous and lonely and really not fun to be around, and I was sleeping all the time and had to force myself to bathe... at one point I was considering taking sleeping pills.... but it's ok, because I was n town when our team didn't make the Final 4, and they werent! Not that I saw any of the games or anything...." Ok, no one wants to hear that. You didn't, did you? I didn't think so. Yeah, and that's probably one of the most interesting parts of my life. I mean, even the things about me that are fairly unusual (my religious background) aren't the kind of thing anyone gives a rat's ass about. Basically, journalism is a chance to do more of this. Rather than be the interesting one, my lot in life is to get just near enough the interesting stuff that I can tell other people's stories. That's what I do. And it, in itself, is very interesting. But the experiences aren't mine, so they don't make *me* interesting. I'm just a good storyteller in building full of good storytellers.
